steve G Mackay
Steve has worked mainly in the automation, data acquisition, instrumentation, data communications and process control areas of engineering throughout Australia, Europe, Africa and North America for the past thirty five years. Although perhaps initially greeted with some scepticism, he pioneered the application of new technologies in Australia and overseas such as industrial data communications systems, engineering e-learning using remote labs and the commercialisation of engineering training worldwide with success.
He has been responsible for activities ranging from detailed hardware and software design for control system interfaces to the management of complex multimillion dollar mechanical and electrical projects. His experience has covered many industries including power stations, mining, mineral processing, oil and gas and petrochemical plants. Steve has also presented numerous courses world-wide on industrial data communications, data acquisition and process control and the impact of new technologies on instrumentation and control to over 30,000 engineers and technicians, and has a particular interest in practical and leading edge aspects of engineering practice.
He is currently Dean of the Engineering Institute of Technology (EIT) which provides accredited diplomas, bachelor and master degrees in engineering to over 1500 students per year throughout the world both online and on-campus (using remote labs, video and web conferencing technologies). He is part-time Technical Director of the sister company, IDC Technologies, which has trained over 500,000 engineering professionals on over 300 different subjects throughout the world over the past twenty five years and which also runs engineering conferences and publishes a wide range of books. He founded both companies which have a staff complement of over 200 engineering professionals and support staff throughout the world with offices ranging from Australia, South Africa, the UK, USA and India.
He has over 25 of his books (3 of them of which he was a co-author and the remainder for which he has acted as editor) published by Elsevier (Butterworths and Newnes) throughout the world on aspects of engineering. A Fellow of Engineers Australia, he practises as a Chemical, Mechanical and Electrical Chartered Professional Engineer.
